Similarities Of Imperialism In Heart Of Darkness And...
SIMILARITIES Imperialism is the main similarity present in all 3 stories. In the Heart of Darkness European Imperialism and itsââ¬â¢ cruelty is displayed, while in Apocalypse Now we see American Imperialism fighting the Vietnam War. Hearts of darkness also has some imperialism, but it is hidden in metaphors, showing ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢imperialismââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ of human soul. Next, main protagonist is sent to explore ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢the darknessââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢, in Heart of Darkness it is Marlow, in Apocalypse now it is Willard and in the Hearts of Darkness it is director and Frencis Coppelaââ¬â¢s wife, Elanor. Next, Kurtz is potrayed as a God figure in all 3 of stories. In the Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse now he is a genius, getting people to worship him, and administration in both cases thinksâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Next difference is the time when story is happening. TIme in Heart of Darkness is 19th century and time of Imperialism, particullary, Dutch imperialism by Leopold II. Apocalypse nowââ¬â¢s story is happening during Vietnam war in 1960ââ¬â¢s. Because of this, changes are needed, for example bows are replaced by guns, steam boats by regular boats, Russian trader is replaced by American Journalist etc. Next, Willard is displayed as insane in the beginning of the movie, damaged by the war, while Marlow is completely sane at the beginning of Heart of Darkness, hired by his aunt to go to Congo. Furthermore, in novella, protagonist Marlow is sent to look what Kurtz is doing, but in the Apocalypse now he is sent to kill Kurtz and he manages to do that near the end of the movie. In the novella Kurtz dies of natural cause while on the boat. Kurtzian figure of Hearts of Darkness, Francis Coppela didnââ¬â¢t die, but there are also frames where he is pointing gun to his head suggesting that he had suicidal thoughts regarding the movie making.
